Warning Description: Winter Storm Warning
Warning Date: 4:25 am EST on January 7, 2009
WarningSum:...Winter Storm Warning Remains In Effect Until 7 Am Est
Thursday...
Warning Message:A Winter Storm Warning for sleet and freezing rain remains in
effect until 7 am EST Thursday.
A complex storm system will continue to impact the eastern
Catskills...Mid Hudson valley...Berkshires and Litchfield Hills
through today and into tonight.
Around one half inch of ice is expected through today...with total
snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches through tonight. The combination
of snow...sleet and significant icing will likely result in
downed trees and power outages.
A mix of sleet and freezing rain will transition to freezing rain
this morning. Freezing rain will be the dominant precipitation
type through most of the day today. As warmer air moves in at the
surface...a brief changeover to plain rain is expected this
afternoon for portions of the Mid Hudson valley and Litchfield
Hills before the precipitation changes back to light snow
Wednesday night.
The wintry precipitation will result from a storm that will move
northeast up the Saint Lawrence valley today as a secondary storm
forms off New Jersey. The system will move to the Canadian
Maritimes Thursday morning.
A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...
sleet...and ice are expected or occurring. This will make travel
very hazardous or impossible.
